Linea Nigra
Jazmina Barrera's hybrid book on pregnancy and early motherhood, translated by Christina MacSweeney.
Described by its publisher as part memoir and part manifesto, the book draws on figures from Louise Bourgeois to Ursula K. Le Guin and the Nahua model Luz Jiménez. Barrera writes through pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and young motherhood, linking them to earthquakes, lunar eclipses and creative labor, and ends by arguing that childbearing is art. It was a finalist for the Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize.
