Life and Death of the Spanish Republic

Henry Buckley

A correspondent who knew Spain's leaders first hand tells the story of the Republic's rise and fall.

Henry Buckley was a British newspaper correspondent who lived in Spain from 1929 and reported on the Second Republic and the civil war that destroyed it. His memoir, first published in 1940, draws on his friendships with the politicians and fellow journalists of the period. Most copies were lost in the Blitz, and the book was out of print for decades before this new edition.

Paul Preston

Historian of Modern Spain

It is really one of the great books about the Spanish Civil War, which is beautifully written, and written by someone who knew all the major protagonists and does wonderful pen portraits of them. But he also felt very deeply about the big issues. It is a book that is ultimately very sympathetic to the republic, and rightly so, in my view.
