Bryan Stevenson founded the Equal Justice Initiative in Alabama and this account centres on Walter McMillian, sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit on the testimony of a man who later recanted. Around that case Stevenson sets the children sentenced to die in prison, the mentally ill, and the mechanics of who gets a competent defence. It is a memoir and an argument, and the argument is that the system is not broken but working as built.
