Hunger
Knut Hamsun's 1890 novel set in Christiania, now Oslo, in Sverre Lyngstad's translation for Penguin.
Hunger (Sult) is a novel by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun, published in 1890 and hailed as a literary opening of the 20th century. Jo Nesbø calls it an Oslo novel from the days when the city was called Christiania, and quotes its opening line about the strange city no one escapes until it has left its mark. Open Library lists its subjects as genius and mental depression. Sverre Lyngstad translated this Penguin edition from 1998.
