How Animals Work

Knut Schmidt-Nielsen

Knut Schmidt-Nielsen’s short book on the physiology of animals, built around the problems that bodies have to solve: getting oxygen, holding water, staying warm, moving. He was the comparative physiologist who worked out how camels manage and how kangaroo rats live without drinking, and he writes about size and scale in a way that makes the constraints on any body obvious. Published by Cambridge in 1972 and still used.
