Hopscotch

Julio Cortázar · 1987

Julio Cortázar's novel built to be read in more than one order, in a Pantheon paperback.

Cortázar wrote it in Paris and published it in Spanish in 1963 and in English in 1966. An author’s note offers two routes: read chapters 1 to 56 straight through, or hop through all 155 chapters following a Table of Instructions. Gregory Rabassa’s translation shared the inaugural National Book Award in the translation category. Fonseca says it will always be dear to him.
