Hitler’s People: The Faces of the Third Reich
Portraits of the Nazi leadership, and the uncomfortable finding that many of them were unremarkable.
Richard J. Evans, the historian of the Third Reich, builds a group portrait out of individual lives, from Hitler and the inner circle down through the functionaries who made the machinery run. The conclusion that most were ordinary rather than monstrous is not new, but the biographical detail is handled by someone who knows the period as well as anyone.

Richard J. Evans, Hitler’s People: The Faces of the Third Reich. This very well-reviewed book does not seem to have either new data or new theory, as yes it does show a lot of the Nazis were “pretty ordinary people.” Yet it is so well-written and well-presented that it deserves a high recommendation nonetheless.
