His Only Wife
A Ghanaian bride is married off to lure a man away from the woman he loves, and slowly decides what she is owed.
Afi is married in a ceremony her husband does not attend, to a wealthy man his mother wants prised away from the woman he actually loves. Installed in a Accra flat and expected to win him by being agreeable, Afi slowly works out what she is owed and what she wants. Medie writes the machinery of family obligation in Ghana with clear eyes and a good deal of wit, and gives her heroine a properly earned spine.
