Hero of Two Worlds
The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution
A moderate in two revolutions, eventually turned on by both sides he tried to hold together.
Mike Duncan follows the Marquis de Lafayette from teenage volunteer in the American Revolution through the French Revolution, imprisonment, Napoleon and the July Revolution of 1830. The thread is that Lafayette was a liberal moderate in eras that had no use for one: too radical for the aristocracy, too aristocratic for the radicals, and repeatedly discarded by both. Duncan, of the Revolutions podcast, tells it as narrative history at pace.

Duncan does a fantastic job telling his story, which is a thrilling adventure, one filled with long odds, battles won, and tragic disillusionment.
