Happy Like Murderers
Fred and Rosemary West, written without a single concession to the true-crime appetite.
Gordon Burn spent years on the Wests, and the book refuses every convention of the genre: no propulsive narrative, no investigator to identify with, no resolution offered. He writes the ordinariness of Cromwell Street at exhausting length, which is the argument, that the horror was domestic and adjacent and largely unnoticed. It is a hard book to recommend and an impossible one to dismiss.

Burn calmly takes you on a submarine ride through the horrors of married serial killers Fred and Rosemary West, and he never comes up for air. Unlike much of the true crime ground out these days, this book does not feel cheap and exploitative.
