Good Strategy Bad Strategy

Richard Rumelt

Most corporate strategy is slogans. Rumelt shows what a real strategy contains and how to build one.

Richard Rumelt, a professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, separates real strategy from goal-setting and slogans. Good strategy, he argues, has a kernel: a clear diagnosis of the challenge, a guiding policy for dealing with it, and coherent actions to carry it out. He uses examples from business, the military and government to show both kinds at work.

Most books about business strategy are indeed terrible. The great take away of this book is that good strategy is really just about structured thinking about problems. Rumelt is a brilliant expositor of how you can do that in relation to a range of business issues.
