Ellis takes six episodes from the 1790s, among them the Burr and Hamilton duel, the dinner that traded the capital for assumption of state debts, Washington’s farewell, and the silence Congress kept on slavery. He treats the revolutionary generation as men who did not know how the story ended. The improvisation is the point. Nothing was settled, and their quarrels were arguments about what they had actually made.
