Fire in the Belly
The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz
An artist who made his fury into work, by a journalist who was there in the East Village.
David Wojnarowicz was a painter, photographer, writer and activist who grew up hustling in Times Square and died of AIDS in 1992 at thirty-seven. Cynthia Carr knew him and covered the East Village scene for The Village Voice, and her biography reconstructs both the man and the decade around him, including the censorship fights his work provoked and the fury that fuelled it.

Her portrait of Wojnarowicz and his era brilliantly captures what it means to lead a fiercely principled life in a corrupt world.
