Fat Is a Feminist Issue
A psychotherapist's argument that compulsive eating and dieting are about women's lives, not a lack of willpower.
Susie Orbach’s 1978 book, written from her work as a psychotherapist with women who struggled with eating and weight. She argues that compulsive eating and the pursuit of thinness are responses to the pressures placed on women, and that dieting does not work. The book offers an approach built on understanding why we eat, and it became a classic of feminist writing about the body.

This book isn’t entirely to do with the history of medicine, but it is relevant. I think it is still as important today as when it first came out in 1978. Orbach exposes our obsession with our bodies and the narcissistic nature of society.
