Erin Accampo Hern looks at cases of genuine success in African governance and development, asking what conditions produced them rather than starting from collapse and working backwards. Readable and instructive, though the central causal claim is arguably at least as persuasive when read in the opposite direction to the one she intends.

I found this book highly readable and instructive, but I find it more convincing if you reverse the central conclusion. Still, this book “tells you how things actually are,” and that is more important than any objections one might lodge.
