Exiled in Modernity: Delacroix, Civilization, and Barbarism

David O’Brien reads Eugene Delacroix’s paintings alongside his extensive journals and criticism, and places him squarely inside the nineteenth-century argument about progress, civilisation and barbarism. It recovers Delacroix as a thinker with a position rather than a romantic colourist, and the writing is as much the subject as the pictures.
