Evil Under the Sun
A Hercule Poirot mystery from Agatha Christie, here in a 2025 HarperCollins paperback edition.
Christie published it in June 1941 with the Collins Crime Club, and Dodd, Mead followed in the US that October. Poirot takes a holiday at a secluded hotel in Devon, where a flirtatious former actress, Arlena Marshall, is found strangled near a cove. Several guests disliked her, so suspects are plentiful. Ragnar Jónasson read it at eleven, and says it led him to translate Christie and to write crime fiction.

I would have to say Evil Under the Sun by Agatha Christie. That was the first Christie book I ever read, at the age of 11, and that led me to eventually translate and write crime fiction.
