Escape from Evil

Ernest Becker

Becker's sequel to The Denial of Death: how the fear of dying drives people to do evil.

Ernest Becker’s last book, published after his death in 1974, continues the argument of The Denial of Death. He proposes that much of the evil people do springs from their attempts to escape the fear of death, above all by finding scapegoats and enemies to destroy. The book ranges across anthropology, psychology and history.

But in Escape From Evil, you feel he is more free to express his own views. He was dying when he wrote it, and a lot of it was done posthumously by his estate. It’s much more passionate and clear. It’s wild in places, speculative in places, but it’s full of ideas and wonderfully written.
