An aspiring actor lands in grimy 1970s New York and spends a decade orbiting his best friend.
Gil Freeman leaves Illinois for New York in 1974 to become an actor, and spends the next decade in cheap apartments with Emma, a caustic, self-destructive poet he loves and never quite has. Barnhardt wrote it at twenty-nine and it is very funny about the theatre, poverty and the city before it was cleaned up, while being unsentimental about what happens to people who are brilliant and unwell.
