Dying to Win
The strategic logic of suicide terrorism
A data-driven study arguing suicide terrorism is strategic, not religious.
Political scientist Robert Pape built a database of suicide attacks from 1980 onward and uses it to argue that the common explanation, religious extremism, fits the evidence poorly. His analysis points instead to a strategic pattern: campaigns aimed at compelling democracies to withdraw military forces from territory the attackers see as their homeland. Widely cited in debates about terrorism, the book is the one Zeeshan Ali reaches for to counter the claim that suicide attacks are driven mainly by Islam.
