Don Quixote
A man reads too many chivalric romances and sets out to live inside one.
A minor gentleman reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his grip, renames himself Don Quixote, and rides out with a farmer as his squire to right wrongs that mostly are not there. Cervantes published the two parts a decade apart, and the second is partly about characters who have read the first. It is generally called the first modern novel, and it remains far funnier than its reputation suggests.
