Divide Me by Zero
A Russian-born writer in New York faces her mother's death as her marriage and love life come apart.
Lara Vapnyar’s 2019 novel, published by Tin House, opens a week before the narrator’s mother dies, as she buys caviar at a Russian food store on Staten Island. Raised in the Soviet Union, she remembers eating caviar in a Moscow kitchen before school tests. She has agreed to marry a very rich Russian man while still married to Len and still in love with another man. Jenny Offill calls it inventive and insightful.

Lara Vapnyar's Divide Me by Zero was another delight. An incredibly inventive and insightful novel about a Russian-American woman whose life falls apart slowly and then all at once.
