Sister Helen Prejean began writing to a condemned man in Louisiana in 1982 and became his spiritual adviser, accompanying him to the electric chair. She also sat with the families of the teenagers he and his accomplice murdered, and the book refuses to let either fact soften the other. Published in 1993 and adapted into the film with Susan Sarandon, it changed the terms of the American death penalty debate.
