Contours of the World Economy, 1-2030 AD
Two thousand years of the world economy, measured, by the historian who built the numbers.
Angus Maddison, the economic historian who reconstructed estimates of world output back to Roman times, sets out his findings in a series of essays. He tracks population and income per head across the world’s regions from the first century to the present, explains how the West pulled ahead, and offers projections to 2030.

Maddison is the only person who has produced the only existent series of quantitative national account statistics, GDP per capita, for most countries of the world since 1820, and for some (like the Roman Empire) going back to the 1st century AD. Everybody who wants to do empirically based economic history has to start with Maddison.
