Confessions of an Italian

Ippolito Nievo · 2014

Ippolito Nievo's epic historical novel of one man's long life and the unification of Italy, translated by Frederika Randall for Penguin Classics in 2014.

Confessions of an Italian is widely considered the most important novel about the Italian Risorgimento. Ippolito Nievo wrote it in 1858 and it appeared posthumously in 1867. Carlo Altoviti, aged eighty-three, writes down the confessions of his long life, devoted to a free, unified Italy and to the inconstant Pisana. Dacia Maraini admires Nievo’s portrait of the girl Pisana. Frederika Randall’s translation has an introduction by Lucy Riall.
