Concordant Discord: The Interdependence of Faiths

R.C. Zaehner

The Gifford Lectures of an Oxford scholar who thought the great religions were arguing about the same thing.

R.C. Zaehner delivered these lectures at St Andrews between 1967 and 1969, setting the mystical traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism alongside Christianity to find where they converge and where they genuinely part. Zaehner held the Oxford chair in Eastern Religions and read his sources in their own languages. The book ranges widely, sometimes to a fault, but the material on Indian religion remains valuable.

R.C. Zaehner, Concordant Discord: The Interdependence of Faiths. Half of this volume is amazing, the other half meandering. The best parts are on Hinduism and Buddhism, and how they can best be understood in relation to Western religions.
