Anagrama published the Spanish original, Coronel Lágrimas, in 2015, and Restless Books issued the English edition in 2016. The story is loosely based on the life of the eccentric mathematician Alexander Grothendieck. The Guardian reviewed it as an allegory of our hyperinformed age and of the clash between European and Latin American history, and the New York Times Book Review shortlisted it.
