Cockroach
An immigrant in Montreal, half man and half cockroach, tells his therapist the story of what he fled.
Rawi Hage’s novel follows an unnamed immigrant from a war-torn Middle Eastern country living in poverty through a Montreal winter. After a failed suicide attempt he is ordered into therapy, where he tells his story while stealing from other people’s homes and imagining himself as a cockroach. The novel moves between his present life on the margins and the violence he left behind.

So it’s a very typical portrayal of the new types of immigrants who live absolutely on the edge of society. It’s gripping because it has a parallel story of the trauma that happened to the main character in his homeland.
