China had its own traditions of openness to outsiders, and rather more of them than expected.
Shuchen Xiang argues against the picture of Chinese thought as inherently insular, tracing philosophical and historical strands that treated cultural difference as something to absorb rather than exclude. The argument runs against a good deal of received opinion in both Chinese and Western scholarship, and is made philosophically rather than by anecdote.
