Carl Zimring’s history of scrap recycling in the United States, from colonial ragpickers through the peddlers and junk dealers of the nineteenth century to the industrial scrap trade. It is also a social history: the trade was worked disproportionately by immigrants, particularly Jewish families, and Zimring traces how the stigma attached to handling waste shaped who did the work and how they were seen.
