Cane River

Lalita Tademy left a corporate career to research her family’s history, and turned it into this novel following four generations of enslaved and freed women along the Cane River in Louisiana, from before the Civil War into the twentieth century. Drawing on real records, she portrays mothers and daughters fighting to hold their families together and to claim ownership of their own lives.
