Cadillac Jack
An antiques scout lives out of his Cadillac, collecting objects and women with equal futility.
Jack McGriff drives a pearl Cadillac around the American South and Southwest buying and selling antiques, and narrates a few weeks in which he acquires a boot that may have belonged to Billy the Kid and pursues two women in Washington. McMurtry was himself a rare book dealer, and the novel’s real subject is the collector’s temperament: the object you have is never the one you want.
