Brown argues that true belonging does not require changing who you are, but demands that you be who you are, which is harder. Drawing on her research interviews and on Maya Angelou’s line about belonging nowhere and everywhere, she makes a case for standing alone when your group is wrong, for civility across difference, and for showing up in person. It is a short book with a blunt thesis, aimed at a culture she sees sorting itself into bunkers.
