The most-read correspondent of the war, writing about privates rather than generals.
Ernie Pyle wrote for the enlisted men and about them, from North Africa through Sicily, Italy and Normandy, in columns syndicated to hundreds of American papers and read by families trying to picture where their sons were. He avoided strategy almost entirely in favour of the specific soldier, the mud and the boredom. He was killed by machine-gun fire on Ie Shima in April 1945, having pushed on to the Pacific.
