Jeff VanderMeer’s 2017 novel is set in the ruins of a nameless city overrun by biotechnology from a firm called the Company. Rachel, a scavenger, finds a small anemone-like creature in the fur of Mord, a giant bear, and names it Borne. She suspects her lover Wick is hiding secrets about his work at the Company. The Guardian said the book explores the radical transformation of life forms.
