Barn 8
A novel set among the hens of an industrial egg farm that takes the personhood of chickens seriously.
Deb Olin Unferth published Barn 8 in 2020. It is a novel about the personhood of chickens and industrial egg farming, and the extensive research she did for it also appears in a long article in Harper’s Magazine. The New York Times described it as beautiful, urgent and politically charged. Unferth became a vegan in 2008, and her memoir Revolution was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Jenny Offill says the plot concerns a plan to steal a million chickens.

Deb Olin Unferth's Barn 8 isn't out until March but it's fantastic and strange. The plot concerns a plan to steal a million chickens so it basically couldn't be more interesting.
