Carlos Fuentes · 1991

Carlos Fuentes's short novel narrated in the second person and set in a shadowy house, in Lysander Kemp's translation.

Aura is a short novel by the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, published in Mexico City in 1962 and told entirely in the second person. Lysander Kemp’s English translation appeared in 1965 from Farrar, Straus and Giroux, which also issued this 145-page paperback. Ave Barrera read it as a teenager and says it both terrified and fascinated her. She admires the way it builds atmosphere and traps the reader in a house with the witch Aura.

It is a very brief and self-contained novel that maintains the tension in each line. What I most admire about it is its ability to build atmosphere and cause us to feel trapped in this shady house among the smell of moss and decaying plants.
