Annihilation
Four women enter the government-sealed Area X, where earlier expeditions ended in disappearance and trauma.
The opening book of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach series follows the twelfth expedition into Area X, an uninhabited zone managed by the government. Four women go in to survey the land and ecosystem, and earlier teams fell apart through disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers and mental trauma. VanderMeer drew on a hike through St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. The 2014 novel won the Nebula and Shirley Jackson Awards.
