Anita de Monte Laughs Last

In 1985 a Cuban American artist falls from a New York window and her famous sculptor husband is acquitted. In 1998 a scholarship student at an Ivy League art history department has never heard her name. Gonzalez, writing in the shadow of Ana Mendieta’s real death, is scathing about who the canon keeps and who it quietly loses, and gives Anita a voice from beyond it that refuses to be tidy.
