Animal Liberation

The Definitive Classic of the Animal Movement

Peter Singer · 2009

Peter Singer's 1975 book arguing that the interests of animals deserve consideration because they can suffer.

Animal Liberation is a 1975 book by the Australian philosopher Peter Singer. It is widely considered within the animal liberation movement to be its founding philosophical statement. Following Jeremy Bentham, Singer argued that animals’ interests should count because of their ability to suffer, and he popularised the term speciesism. Olga Tokarczuk says it gave her, many years ago, the language and arguments to understand that granting rights to animals is one of humanity’s great ethical tasks.
