Animal Farm book cover

Animal Farm

George Orwell · 1945

Orwell's satirical fable in which farm animals overthrow their owner, only to watch the pigs rebuild the tyranny they rose against.

Orwell’s short allegory follows the animals of Manor Farm as they drive out their human owner and set up a society on the promise of equality. Power gradually gathers in the pigs, the founding ideals are quietly rewritten, and the new rulers come to resemble the old. Written as the Second World War ended, the fable is a pointed attack on how revolutions curdle into tyranny, told in deceptively simple storybook form.
