American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin
Seventy sonnets by Terrance Hayes, written in the opening two hundred days of the Trump presidency.
Terrance Hayes, who won the National Book Award for Poetry in 2010 for Lighthead, gives all seventy poems in this collection the same title. They explore what American, assassin and love mean in the sonnet form. The book won a Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in 2019 and the Library of Congress’s Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry in 2020. Ada Limón calls it a triumph.
