A Visit from the Goon Squad
Thirteen linked stories about a record executive, his assistant and the people around them, moving from the 1970s into the future.
Jennifer Egan’s 2010 novel is built from thirteen linked stories that circle Bennie Salazar, an aging punk rocker turned record executive, and Sasha, his troubled young assistant. The stories move back and forth from the 1970s into the near future, across New York, San Francisco, Italy and Kenya, as life sends a large cast in directions none of them expected. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

This is a novel about the interconnected lives of many people, but Sasha, a record executive's passionate and sticky-fingered personal assistant, always struck me as the main character. She views the objects she steals as collectively expressing "the raw, warped core of her life," and it's heartbreaking. No wonder this novel won a Pulitzer.
