The 1940 manual that shaped studio pottery in the West, part technical handbook and part manifesto.
Leach published this in 1940 after eleven years in Japan, and it did two things at once: it taught a generation how to make pots, covering clay bodies, glazes, kilns and throwing, and it argued for a standard of workmanship drawn from Song China, Korea and Japan rather than from European factory ware. It shaped studio pottery in Britain and America for fifty years, and the argument it started about East and West has been running ever since.
