James Fergusson’s account of the British deployment to Helmand in 2006, when a force sent to support reconstruction found itself in the heaviest sustained combat the army had seen in decades. The title comes from the ammunition expended. Fergusson interviewed the soldiers who fought at Sangin, Now Zad and Musa Qala, and sets their experience against the political decisions in London that put them there with too few men and no clear task.

Why? Because that’s as far as the media were allowed to go into Afghanistan. And ITN covered it, but at exactly the same time the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers was up at Now Zad where the media weren’t allowed and they fought the biggest trench engagement with bayonets since the First World War! But because the media couldn’t go there the media coverage was all about the paras in Sangin and nobody knew about Now Zad.
