A Dance with Dragons

Running alongside its predecessor rather than after it, this volume picks up the characters held back from the previous book: the exile learning that conquest is easier than government, the outcast heading east, the watchman trying to hold a wall with too few men. Martin’s interest here is administration, the unglamorous business of feeding cities and keeping oaths, which is where most of his rulers finally come undone.
