Eudora Welty’s first book collects seventeen stories set almost entirely in Mississippi, among travelling salesmen, deaf couples, postmistresses and a woman who has stopped speaking. Katherine Anne Porter’s introduction announced her as a major writer and she was, though the range here is wider and stranger than her later reputation suggests. Several stories, including Why I Live at the P.O. and A Worn Path, have been anthologised ever since.

After I read this book of short stories , I was so inspired I realized I had always secretly wanted to be a writer. But being dyslexic, my spelling was not very good. However, years later, I was lucky enough to meet the author, who assured me that spelling was not that big a problem.
