Ignatius J. Reilly is thirty, obese, medievalist by inclination, and living with his mother in New Orleans while blaming the modern age for his circumstances. Toole could not place the novel and killed himself in 1969; his mother pressed the manuscript on Walker Percy for years until he read it. It was published in 1980 and won the Pulitzer Prize the following year.
