Frank Reid runs a small printing works in Moscow in 1913. His English wife leaves for England with their three children, then sends the children back alone, and a young peasant woman arrives to look after them. Fitzgerald explains almost nothing, trusts the reader completely, and evokes a city and a vanished world in under two hundred pages. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
