Bainbridge tells the last twenty years of Samuel Johnson’s life through his lodging with the Thrale family, and lets Queeney, the Thrales’ watchful eldest daughter, supply corrective letters written decades later. The great man is rendered as by turns brilliant, filthy and pitiable, and the novel is as interested in what the household tolerated as in what he said.
